Costa Rica vacation rentals are becoming more available all the time; and, we love them!
Nine times out of ten, we at TravelOn Costa Rica choose a vacation rental over a hotel. Now, don’t get us wrong; we still love the pampering feel of a great Costa Rica hotel! Nevertheless, there is something special about feeling like you’re in your very own home away from home, right in the rainforest, overlooking the ocean or a lake, and hearing the sounds of the jungle as you wake up with the birds each day!
Regardless of whether you’re traveling with your partner, with friends, or with the entire family, a vacation in an exotic place like Costa Rica is the perfect time to rest, learn more about each other and bond.
Many people book hotels for their vacation stays because it’s convenient. The problem with hotels is that, unless you splurge on that 5-star accommodation, you rarely get the much-needed peace and quiet that a Costa Rica vacation can afford. Not only will you encounter late-night revelers roaming the hotel grounds, but you may even suffer the noise from your next-door neighbors; and, when you try to find some tranquility by the pool, your plans are thwarted by other guests.
The good news is that you can avoid the noise and hotel crowds while in Costa Rica by renting Costa Rica vacation home or condo instead.
Here are the benefits of renting a vacation home vs staying at a hotel in Costa Rica:
Foodies will love getting their kitchen-craft on in a fully equipped kitchen
As foodies, we love to cook and we’ve found that staying in a vacation rental gives us the opportunity to have the best of both worlds; we can fill up the fridge with our favorite foods, make great meals that we enjoy in the privacy of our own dining room, and still get out to local restaurants if we’re feeling it.
More space to spread out
Beyond our culinary passions, we just love the spacious comfort of a vacation home or condo; typically, for about the same price as a good hotel!
When looking for Costa Rica vacation rentals, you will find out that some have 1 or 2 bedrooms, while others have as many as 8 bedrooms or more! Unlike a hotel where you may have to stay apart or even on separate floors, in a private vacation rental condo, home, or villa, you and the gang will all stay in the same digs. Apart from the bedrooms, which often come with en-suite baths, you’ll likely have plenty of common space to share time together because your rental will boast living and dining areas, a fully equipped kitchen, outdoor living spaces, sometimes a pool, and more.
Personal concierge, private chef or cleaning staff, dedicated to your group
Upscale villas and homes for rent in Costa Rica often come with a private concierge or other staff members like a chef or cleaning person. Before you even arrive in Costa Rica, the concierge can help organize your transportation, book tours and activities, and even stock your refrigerator!
If you’re leaning toward booking a hotel because of these kinds of amenities, look a little further; you may just get the pampering of a luxury hotel, all in the convenience of your own private vacation villa.
If this is your idea of a perfect vacation, consider booking your vacation rental through one of the top property management companies in Costa Rica. Among our favorites? HRG Vacations & Properties in the Central Pacific, and Costa Rica Star Villas for vacation villas in Guanacaste.
No crowds; just you and your peeps
Private luxury villas are designed for a limited number of guests; that means you and your guests have assured privacy, and little to no interaction with noisy strangers (unless you seek it out!).
It’s nice to be able to wander down to the kitchen in your PJs, or lounge around the pool and common areas in little else than your bathing suit. Play the music you want, read quietly in the great room, share common space with your own group when you want to, and escape to the privacy and seclusion of your bedroom when you need to without having to schlep down long hallways and ascend in elevators to get there.
Bottom line? Your own private vacation rental feels intimate because it is!
One of the things we hear travelers complain about the most is the hotel pool. Whether it’s the hotel’s own charanga music blaring from the loudspeakers, or the big family with ten crazy kids running around like maniacs, hotel pools can be, well, not all that relaxing for those who are seeking a little serenity under the sun.
When you rent a private home in Costa Rica, you have a private pool for you and your guests.
Saving money on your accommodations gives you more to spend on the adventure!
A short-term rental in Costa Rica is a first-class getaway where you get to enjoy personalized service, seclusion, private pool, and savings on taxes (13% on goods and services in Costa Rica) and that pesky 10% service charge they always tack onto hotel and restaurant bills.
So, where can you find private condos, houses, and villas for rent in Costa Rica?
Costa Rica is a small country, but it’s full of adventure and discovery; and, every area is unique, offering something new and interesting. From rainforests overlooking the ocean to cloud forests in the mountains, volcanos, lakes, and two shores to choose from, there is plenty to see and do and plenty of places to stay.
The hardest part? Picking just one! No worries though; you can always come back!
Here are a few of our favorite areas in the country for renting accommodations and having the adventure of a lifetime:
Central Pacific, Costa Rica
Conveniently located just over an hour from Juan Santamaria International Airport, the area surrounding Jaco, Puntarenas is a great place to escape for a long weekend or an upscale, amenity-filled (think city-level civilization!) Costa Rica vacation.
Los Sueños Resort and Marina offers incredible inshore and offshore adventures for all guests. A premier residential destination, Los Sueños is a master planned community and guests have the choice of staying in any one of a number of gorgeous 1, 2- or 3-bedroom condominiums, or expansive vacation villas. As such, you get to experience the ultimate in resort living.
A few of our favorite things to do around the area include, but are certainly not limited to:
- Sport fishing
- Jet skiing
- Zipline canopy tours
- ATV tours
- Horseback riding
- River Rafting
- Sunset cruises
- Tortuga Island trip for snorkeling, banana boat riding, hiking and more
Did we mention that there are at least a half a dozen amazing day spas in the area? Whether lounging around the pool or on a beach is your thing, or you’re more of an adrenalin junkie, you’ll find plenty to keep you happy and entertained in the Central Pacific of Costa Rica. And, with your vacation rental as a home base, you couldn’t ask for a better setup.
Beach Vacation Rentals in Guanacaste, Costa Rica
In Guanacaste, beach destinations and rental villas or condos abound. Guanacaste is a lot of fun because there are terrific beaches for surfing, beachcombing, swimming, scuba diving, snorkeling, jet skiing, sports fishing, and more.
In addition to that- it’s one of the hot spots for turtle nesting; a great opportunity to get involved in helping to save the sea turtles in Costa Rica.
We think Costa Rica Star Villas offers some of the most amazing homes in the area for your vacation stay.
Alajuela and Guanacaste’s Arenal, Monteverde and Bijagua
If you and the gang are up for a more rustic scene, nature, and something a little different like, say, a volcano, a lake, hot springs, cyan blue rivers, or a cloud forest, then you’ll want to head for areas like Arenal or Monteverde. Among our favorite activities:
- Zipline canopy tours and bridges
- Volcano gazing
- Mountain biking
- Horseback riding
- Waterfall climbing
- Hot springs
- River Rafting
- Bird watching and wildlife spotting
We think you’ll find that the vacation rentals aren’t as abundant or as luxurious as those you will find at the beaches, but still; they’ll be clean, comfortable, cozy and nice. Too rustic for you? There are some amazing hotels and resorts in these areas.
Puerto Viejo, Punta Uva and further south of Limon on the Caribbean Side of Costa Rica
You’ll find plenty of Costa Rica vacation rentals South of Limon in Puerto Viejo, Punta Uva, and other enchanting beaches. Again, though, we think you’ll find that the options are a bit more on the rustic side in this lesser developed part of the country.
However, on the Carribean side, you can sometimes get lucky to find a vacation rental right on the beach (an unusual feat on the Pacific side of the country), while others are just a block or two away, and surrounded by the forest.
A few of our favorite things to do on the Caribbean side:
- Eat rice and beans
- Surf, SUP, and bodyboard
- Take long walks on the beach
- Listen to local reggae bands
Getting to Puerto Viejo or Punta Uva is easy- you can fly to Limon (Aeropuerto Sixaola) and take a bus, shuttle, taxi or Uber. If you have rented a car and are driving, be sure to head out from San Jose in the morning; route 32 is unsafe to drive at night as it can get very foggy and dark.
We’ve had the pleasure of experiencing some of Costa Rica’s most well cared for and beautiful vacation rentals- and, we’re here to share them with you! That said, some areas of Costa Rica are still pristine and undeveloped; we think that’s a great thing, but it also may mean you’ll be happier staying in a hotel.
