Valentine’s Day in Costa Rica

Travel Blog

A long weekend away can make for the perfect Costa Rica Valentine’s day getaway.

It can be hard to come up with a twist on the traditional flowers and dinner at Valentine’s; for something special, consider a 5-day weekend in Costa Rica this year, with short, direct flights from many major U.S. hubs, a long weekend in Costa Rica is totally doable.

There are dozens of romantic hotels, resorts, and vacation rentals that are perfect for delivering on all the romance you’ll need, and, for a brief romantic escape, there are plenty to choose from which are within an hour or so from the airport.  To get the most out of your trip (less time on the road, more time in the room!), stick to the San Jose valley, surrounding hills, and the central pacific coast if flying into Juan Santamaria International, and Playas del Coco and Hermosa if flying into Liberia.

Here are our top suggestions for Valentine’s Day laughter, discovery and romance in Costa Rica, when you’ve only got a long weekend to get away.

Romantic, candlelit dinners are always winners and you’ll have great options no matter where you stay. A private chef for an intimate dinner in the privacy of your rental if you’re staying in or near Los Sueños Resort. Just call Jimmy T’s Provisions or check out Jaco Private Chefs, who will serve the Central Pacific Coastal area ranging from Playa Herradura down to Esterillos.

In San Jose, for dinner out, we recommend La Furca or Grano De Oro for the most in ambiance, service and food. The central Pacific, El Hicaco is perfect for a romantic beachside dinner and al fresco dining on delicious seafood. There are also some great options in Los Sueños Resort & Marina, and for wonderful French dining check out Lemon Zest.

Tortuga Island, about an hour’s cruise from the dock at Los Sueños Marina, is a magical setting for a perfect Valentine’s Day out. White sands and crystalline turquoise waters are the backdrop for a day of snorkeling, kayaking, or lying in the sun. Lunch, snacks and non-alcoholic beverages are usually included; marine wildlife viewing during the cruise depends on what’s around: dolphins, sailfish and whales could make an appearance.

For time out on the water in Guanacaste, you will be near enough to Papagayo to charter a sunset cruise, scuba diving, or a day of sport fishing. Check out Seabird Sailing Excursions for some fun, romantic options.

Pack a lunch and take a horseback ride along the beach or to a local waterfall, for a casual afternoon outdoors. There are great horse back riding tours in just about every beach or forest town you’re likely to visit during your travels in Costa Rica.

Enjoy a luxurious spa day for two at a local day spa, or request that a massage therapist come to you and have your services in the privacy and comfort of your Costa Rica vacation rental.  To find a good local spa or a therapist who will come to you, visit CR Needs.

If the two of you love to dance the night away, the best places for night life are Playa Tamarindo, Jaco Beach, Santa Teresa, and of course San Jose. In San Jose, on weekends, we love Antik Restaurant + Bar for deep house and great DJs flown in from around the world.

In Costa Rica, there are countless ways to say, “I love you.” Treat your sweetheart a Costa Rica getaway this Valentine’s Day.
